RESIDED: in Calvert County; in St. Mary's County by 1706. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Henry Jowles (ca. 1640-ca. 1700/1). MOTHER: Sybill, widow of William Groome. BROTHER: John. SISTERS: Rebecca; Sybill. MARRIED Dryden (1687-1760), daughter of Kenelm Cheseldyne (1640-1708). Her brother was Kenelm Cheseldyne (1683-1719). Her sisters were Mary (1678-?), who married first, James Hay (?-by 1717/18), and second, George Fobes; Susannah (1680-1730), who married Thomas Trueman Greenfield (1682-1733). Her first cousin was Mary Blackiston, who married Matthew Mason (ca. 1689-ca. 1728/29). Dryden subsequently married John Fobes. CHILDREN. SONS: Henry Greenfield; Kenelm. DAUGHTERS: Mary, who married John Johnson Sothoron (?-1744); Sybil; and Rebecca. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Jowles was a second generation burgess who was serving his fifth term in the General Assembly at death. His sons held no known offices. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, St. Mary's County, 1708A (election voided),1708B-1711,1712-1714 (Elections 1-4), 1716-1718, 1719 (died before the 2nd session of the 1719-1721/22 Assembly).
